Staring up at the statue-like Avifors standing on either side of the pathway, Gruso hoped they were right that these would operate the same way as all the others they’d encountered. If they didn’t, they might be in for a major fight against difficult foes.

“Stay right where you are.” He pointed back to Avalon. “Let’s hope we don’t lose the effect if we get too far away.”

“And then what are we going to do?” Oliver asked. He was with Gruso, trying to be of help when Avalon couldn’t.

“Fight.” Gruso gripped his Axe handle tighter. He really hoped I wouldn’t come to that.

“Is that it?” Oliver pointed to a metallic nest about the size of his head. It was too small for the giant birds to use, but it matched the name of the artifact they needed to find.

“Hopefully.” Gruso had an idea. “Tell you what. Stop here. Let me go and get it. But stay in sight of Avalon. Maybe that’s the trick to this one. The birds stay statues unless we get too far away from him, and since he’s an Archer, too far is out of sight. I know the others were just a short distance away.”

Oliver nodded. “Yeah, that makes sense. Go get it.”

Gruso ran forward and didn’t even stop as he scooped up the Bronze Nest. As his fingers touched it. It vanished. But no loot appeared in his bag.

He stopped and stared around. Five more nests were now around the circle of Avifors that all looked like they were seconds away from losing their rocky exteriors and attacking him.

“What happened?” Oliver asked. “We didn’t get it.”

“I didn’t either.” Gruso pointed at the new nests. “But which one is it?”

“Don’t ask me.” Avalon shouted. “I can still just see one nest. How many are you guys seeing?”

“Three,” Oliver said.

“Five,” Gruso replied. He stopped and stared at the nest. They shouldn’t be an illusion. They hadn’t encountered any magic in the game. There weren’t even any classes for magic users. That meant it was some kind of science trick, stage magic.

“Avalon, can you direct me to the one you can see?”

“Sure. It’s off to your left. You ran right past it.”

Gruso turned. There were two off to his left. He started toward the closest one.

“You’re not going toward it,” Avalon shouted. “Try a little more to the right.”

Adjusting his path, Gruso headed toward the other one.

“That’s it. You’re almost on top of it.”

“I can see that one too,” Oliver added.

Squatting down, Gruso moved his hand around the nest. The other two in his line of sight vanished for a second and then reappeared.

“Hey, you made one of them flicker.” Oliver shouted, sounding surprised.

“It’s a prism of some sort.” Gruso picked up the nest and was rewarded by a clink in his bag. “Not sure how it worked exactly.”

“Doesn’t really matter, you got it.” Avalon waved his bow enthusiastically. “We’re two down, only one more to go.”

Smiling to himself, for stopping and thinking about things, Gruso walked back to Oliver.
